Thrust Areas

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Renewable energy often referred to as clean energy, comes from natural sources or processes that are constantly replenished. For example, sunlight or wind keep shining and blowing, even if their availability depends on time and weather. While renewable energy is often thought of as a new technology, harnessing nature’s power has long been used for heating, transportation, lighting, and more. Wind has powered boats to sail the seas and windmills to grind grain. The sun has provided warmth during the day and helped kindle fires to last into the evening. But over the past 500 years or so, humans increasingly turned to cheaper, dirtier energy sources such as coal and fracked gas.

HYBRID ENERGY

Hybrid energy can offer a valuable means of supplying electricity to remote areas. Future success of these systems relies on the continuous research, development and demonstration of renewable energy technologies, featuring improved operating performance, cost reduction and improved reliability.

POWER ELECTRONICS APPLICATION IN POWER SYSTEM

Power electronics is the application of solid-state electronics for the control and conversion of electric power. It provides a basic knowledge of circuitry for the control and conversion of electrical power with high efficiency. The structure of Modern power systems have been separated in three different interlinked sections-generation, transmission and distribution likewise. Mostly the output of generator is always AC, but in some applications we need DC supply, where we get optimum utilization of efficient power with respect to applications example different types of sockets, connectors, switches, and fixtures.

    About Our Department

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering was established in 1998. It offers a 4-year B.E. programme, a 2-year M.E. programme in Power Electronics and Drives, and a Ph.D. programme under the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

The department comprises 25 faculty members, of whom 12 hold doctoral degrees, while 7 faculty members are currently pursuing their Ph.D. at Anna University. Supported by a dedicated team of technical and administrative staff, the department continuously strives for academic excellence and holistic student development.

We aim to provide students with an ideal blend of intellectual knowledge and practical exposure, enabling them to address real-world societal needs. With a strong foundation in electrical and electronics engineering principles, our graduates secure placements in leading industries and pursue higher studies in nationally and internationally recognized institutions.

The department hosts state-of-the-art facilities, including a Centre of Excellence in Electric Vehicles and a DST-sponsored Center for Renewable Energy System Laboratory, equipped with advanced machinery and the latest software tools. Received fund of Rs.40.29 Lakhs from DST for the project ,”Recognition and Characterization of Solar Cell Defects using Combined Thermography Image and Reconfiguration Scheme”. The department has successfully received research grants from DRDO, DST, MSME, and UBA, and regularly organizes national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops.

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering is permanently affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. The B.E. Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme is accredited by NBA under Tier-1 (Washington Accord). Additionally, the department has been an Approved Research Centre of Anna University, Chennai since 2011.
